Born in Schneidemühl (now Pila, Poland) on April 23, 1862, Cohn studied medicine, receiving his doctorate at the University of Königsberg in 1886. He was a lecturer and assistant professor at Königsberg, specializing in pharmacology and physiological chemistry, and also continued in private medical practice.
